Home>About Sustainable Homes
| The program is designed to help residents take action to make their homes, workplaces and communities more sustainable.
The program focuses on five key environmental themes:
- Energy
- Water
- Biodiversity and Sustainable Gardening
- Waste
- Sustainable Travel.
The program consists of workshops, self audits, commitments and free Sustainability Starter Kits.
The Sustainable Homes program will be run for three years across three Councils - Banyule, Darebin, and Whittlesea. Residents from all three municipalities will be able to attend and participate in any of the sessions offered, provided space is available.
The program is funded through the Victorian State Government's Sustainability Fund and the Councils of Banyule, Darebin and Whittlesea. | |
| Workshops | | Practical workshops are delivered on each of the key environmental themes/topics of Energy, Water, Sustainable Gardening, Waste and Travel and one Sustainable Eating workshop. The workshops are designed to give people the tools and confidence to make changes in their home and/or office, whether this be in choosing and installing a water saving shower head or a rainwater tank or getting a compost bin or worm farm working. | |
| Sustainability Kits | | At each workshop participants are encouraged to write down several commitments they are making to live more sustainably, based upon the advice they have received at the workshop from the guest speakers and other participants.
In return for the written commitments, the Sustainable Homes Program has a limited number of Sustainability Starter Kits to give away to local residents.
The Sustainability Kit contains a range of free, simple, easy to use or install products linked to the workshop topic and the advice given on the night by the guest speakers. All products work to help the environment and in many cases will save money on energy and water bills.
